Outreach Programmes

Extension Activities (since June 2008)

 

The college gives prime importance to community oriented programmes in order to inculcate the concern for the society among the students and make them socially responsible citizens. The college undertakes activities to identify the needs of the society and initiate programs to meet such needs. All the departments have their own initiatives for outreach programmes. National service scheme in the college plays a pivotal role in organizing programmes in the community. The college has a registered society (BCM OJASS) for undertaking the general welfare programs of the whole college including major extension activities of the departments. The main activity of the society is to provide support to needy students. It has adopted a tribal settlement in Idukki district and provides all support to educational development of the children there. BCM OJASS is also acting as the nodal agency for Child Line which is a project of Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) New Delhi for child protection. The college has association with local, regional and international organizations including government departments for organizing welfare programmes in community.

 

Extension activities through BCM OJASS

 

BCM college has a registered a society –BCM OJASS- for undertaking the welfare programmes of the college and extension activities. OJASS stands for Outreach Joint Action to Strengthen Society. BCM OJASS is functioning as the Kottayam district nodal office of CHILDLINE, a project under the ministry of women and child development, New Delhi for the protection of children. BCM OJASS undertake many activities for the protection of children in the society.

The important activities of BCM OJASS are as follows:

 

·         Child Line District Nodal Centre. BCM OJASS is the district nodal office of the child line which is a project of Ministry of Women and child Development New Delhi. Child line operates 24 hours toll free telephone number 1098 in which any one can contact for helping children in need.

 

·         Education support programmes (education revolving finance scheme, education support programme, sponsorship programme): These programmes intend to provide support to economically weaker students. The education revolving finance scheme supports the students by extending financial support to the students which the students return without any interest after getting job. In the sponsorship programme, OJASS finds sponsors for the students. OJASS serves as a link between the sponsors and the students.

 

·         Needy students are given medical assistance.

 

·         House construction for the needy students: OJASS has taken up the construction of a house for a student who did not have any proper house. The college has spent an amount of Rs. 4 lakhs for the completion of the house.

 

·         Child Resource Centre: BCM OJASS is acting as a child resource centre. The centre organizes personality development programmes, like skill programmes, mental health programmes etc. for the children. It has a resource team for such programmes.

 

·         Education development programme for the tribal children in Pongampilli tribal colony, Kanthallor Panchayat, Idukki district includes Distribution of Education kit,Tuition facility, Library Facility, Personality development programmes Cultural interaction programme etc.

 

·         Conducted Survey on rubber tappers about their livelihood issues

 

·         Associated with department of Social Work for observing international day against child abuse and Human Rights day

 

·         Organized the programme ‘Saphalam Sayahnam’ for elderly as part of the International day for elders. Elderly people assemble in the college and spend a day with variety of programmes. This is the initiative of department of social work. Programme is jointly organized by Dept. of Social Work and Smile India pakalveedu. This programme for the elderly is being organized every year since 2010.   

 

·         Conducted personality and soft skill development sessions for children in the childrens’ home Thiruvanchoor during Xmas vacation and during summer vacation for the children at Pongampilli Tribal colony.

 

·         Yearly Calendar: Every year the society publish calendar in association with Dept. of Social Work including the details of international days observed.

 

·         Organize harvest fest in the college. The students bring items from home which are auctioned in the college.

 

·         Published a handbook on POCSO Act 2012 (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) I Malayalam and English.

 

·         Organized National Environment Awareness Campaign on the theme: Biodiversity Conservation” with the support of Govt. of Kerala. Organized a seminar on the theme and constructed a vegetable garden in the college campus as part of the programme.

 

·         Conducted a survey on the awareness and practice of parents on rights of children and attitude towards child rights. The survey was conducted among 1017 samples from all the block panchayats in Kottayam district.

 

 

B. Extension activities of the departments:

 

·         The departments visit different destitute homes in and around Kottayam town like Shanthi Bhavan, Abhaya Bhavan, Juvenile Home and Navajeevan Trust.

 

·         Department of Chemistry has constructed a house for needy student as part of golden jubilee celebration with the fund raised from alumni, staff and students (2010).

 

·         Department of Economics visited Kudumbasree units in Kottayam district had took classes on importance of savings.

 

·         Department of Physics organized exhibition on ‘Atrocities against Women’ in association with All India Mahila Samskarika Sankhatana (2013).

 

·         Department of Zoology maintain a small vermicompost unit in the department. They also take classes on healthy practices for youth group in Athirampuzha.

 

·         Dept. of Family and Community Science organized flower arrangement classes for house wives and entrepreneurs

 

·         Dept. of Mathematics runs a Save and share picnic saving scheme since 2001. It’s aim is to conduct final year picnic without taxing the parents.

 

·         English department has set up a library in an orphanage at Children’s village Pampady.

 

·         English department has given financial assistance to an old Kathakali   artist Kudamaloor Sankarankutty Nair(2010-11)

 

·         Students of English department has given classes to the lower primary

students of St.Ann’s School.

 

·         Department of social work has organized a social sensitization camp at Kavaratti, Lakshadweep. Various activities like Socio-economic survey, Participatory Rural Appraisal, Awareness classes on different topics, Community Interaction Programmes, Shramdhan, Cultural programmes etc.were conducted

 

·         Department of social work has undertaken Project to tackle ‘Iodine Deficiency Disorders among children’ and carried out different types of programmes in Kottayam district.

 

·         Department of social work has organized Session on ‘Child Sexual Abuse’ to the Kudumbasree members of Mutholi Panchayat.

 

·         Department of social work has observed Anti Narcotics day- 26 Jun 2008 with variety of programmes.

 

·         Department of social work observes International Day against Child Abuse- every year on November 19.

 

·         Department of social work Observed Anti torture day at Kanjiram, Grama Vikasana Hall, Kanjiram in Thiruvarpu Panchayathu on 07 Jul 2009. Programme organized in association with World Vision, Kottayam ADP.

 

·         Department of social work organizes a programme in College auditorium for elders ‘Saphalam Sayahnam’ in association with Smile India, Pakalveedu to observe International Day of Elderly.

 

·         Department of social work has associated with ‘Vazhikkannu ‘Road safety programme by Malayala Manorama. (i) Taught street play to students of Cross Roads School, Pampady for programme related to Vazhikkannu.

 

·         Department of social work has conducted PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal) at Kosamattom colony to understand the problems faced by the colony people

 

·         Department of social work has implemented project ‘Kuttikalkoru Karavalayam’ in Vijayapuram Panchayat supported by UNICEF.

 

·         Department of social work has received National City Makers Caravan on 15.10.10 (National Caravan- a national level programme for the homeless- organized by IGSSS). Programme organized in association with Life Tree Foundation Kottayam.

 

·         Department of social work has organized a Monologue play by Ojas (Pune) (on 17.8.2011) in our college. The programme was for the support of ‘Irom Sharmilla”.

 

·         Department of social work has associated with ‘Childline’ for organizing ‘Child line Se Dosti’ programme Mr. Rajagopal IPS, District Police Chief has flagged off the vehicle propaganda in Kottayam District from BCM College.

 

·         Department of social work has associated with ‘Childline’ Kottayam and Labour Department, Kottayam District and organized two days awareness program against ‘Child Labour’.

 

·         Department of social work had undertaken IDDR programme of GoI and UNDP

DRR (Govt. of India United Nations Development Project) Programme & Kerala State Disaster Management Authority in Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts.

 

·         Department of social work Organized Samanwaya Sandhya, theme based cultural infotainment programe which involved, students from different special schools in and around Kottayam.

 

·         Department of social work Associated with ‘Catherina Kasper Social Service Society, Bangalore (Pala Office) in organizing photo exhibition of Jijo Mangara (on 10.1.2013) on the theme ‘Touching the Untouched’.

 

·         Department of social work Organized social Sensitization camp for Sem – I (2012-14) at Thalumkandam, Mankulam (between Adimali & Munnar). Conducted Socio Economic survey, sports and games for the children, community living, special awareness sessions for students on different topics, cultural exchange programmes and awareness session for kudumbasree members.

 

·         Department of social work gave reception to ‘Statewide Cycle Rally from Kasargod to Thiruvananthapuram organized by Kerala Police.

 

·         Organized ‘Harvest Fest’ in the college in order to sensitize the students on importance of agriculture.

 

·         Dept. of Family and community science runs an online counseling service (smart line). During the last five years 44 cases were given guidance,119 cases were given counseling and 33 cases were referred for higher consultations.

 

Surveys conducted:

·                      Conducted a socioeconomic survey at Kavarathi island: report handed over to Kavarathi Dweep Panchayat authorities for action.

·                     Conducted a survey on problems faced by SHGs in Kavarathi island (this survey was conducted as per the request of Social Welfare department, Lakshadweep): Report handed over to Social Welfare Board, Lakshadweep.

·                     Conducted a survey on the socio-economic conditions of tribals in Pongampilli tribal settlement: Report handed over to Panchayat committee , Kanthalloor panchayat..

·                     Conducted survey on prevalence of child sexual abuse: 

·                     Conducted a survey in Kottayam town to collect data on the street vendors: Report handed over to authorities for formations of policy on street vendors.

·                     Conducted a survey at Manorama Jn. In Kottayam town to find out the number of traffic violations by all kinds of vehicles crossing the junction: Report published in Malayala Manorama daily for attention of authorities.

·                      Conducted a survey at midnight in Kottayam town to collect the data on homeless people sleeping on the streets: Report handed over to national NGO and Voice of nature society. Initiated actions for temporary provision of houses.

·                     Conducted survey to get the details of problems faced by the chickenguinea affected people. This survey was conducted as part of research programme of  ICMR.

·                     Conducted a survey in Kottayam Municipality to identify the needs of palliative care. The survey was conducted in association with Mother foundation who provide palliative care services: Mother foundation started the project of palliative care based on the survey report.

·                     Conducted a survey on the problems faced by students in Lakshadweep for their education: report handed over to Lakshadweep authorities

·                     Conducted a socio economic survey at Thalamkandam tribal colony, Adimali, Idukki district: report handed over to panchayat authorities. Also conducted awareness classes on identified problems

·                     Conducted a survey at Pongampilli tribal colony on land allocation for the tribals by government (the survey was conducted as desired by the Chief Minister of Kerala): report under preparation.

·                     Conducted survey in Thiruvarp Panchayat as part of participatory rural appraisal   in association  with world vision India. World vision has initiated programmes on the findings.

Most of the programmes are organized with the support of the beneficiaries also. The college has association with World Vision India (Kottayam ADP), Smile India foundation, Life Tree foundation, Rajagiri Outreach, Kottayam Social Service Society, Mother foundation Kanakkary, Vijayapuram Panchayat, Labour department Govt. of Kerala, NRHM, ICMR, Kanthallor grama Panchayat, Swanthanam, Abhayabhavan, Navjeevan Trust, Christavasramam Manganam, Children’s home Thiruvanchoor etc. for conducting extension programmes.

 

Awards for Extension Activities

 

·         Principal Dr.Sr.Karuna received BEST PRINCIPAL award instituted by the Catholic Federation of India in memory of HIS HOLINESSPOPE JOHN PAUL

 

·          Dept. of Social Work received an award from Kottayam Social Service Society for its innovative social service programmes in 2011.

 

 Ms. Sethuparvathy MSW student 2012-14 Batch was given Good Samaritan Budding Social Worker Award by Kottayam Social Service Society for her initiatives in forming a group of students for providing support to cancer patients.
