FOOD SCIENCE ASSOCIATION  INAUGURATION    

THE ASSOCIATION BEING INAUGURATED BY THE MANAGING DIRECTORS OF ANCHUTHARA SPICES,
MR AND MRS JAMES ZACHARIAS

The Food Science Association has always had the honor of being represented by eminent personalities like renowned food industrialists and academicians. This year it was decided to conduct the inauguration on the 3rd of August 2006 at 2.15. p.m. The Chief Guests for the day were Mr. and Mrs. James Zachariahs, The Managing Director and partner of Anchuthara Spices, Cherthala. It was a fruitful meeting with the Chief Guest answering all the questions put forward to them by the students. The meeting started with a prayer song by Miss. Greeshma Sadanandan and Miss. Lintumol of III D.C. Food science. The welcome and introduction of the Chief Guest was done by Mrs. Anju Cherian, Head of the Department. This was followed by the inaugural address and the inaugural function. a solo was sung by Miss. Lintumol of third year. A memento was presented to the guests by Mrs. Annie Thomas. The vote of thanks was proposed by Miss. Sanam Basheer of final year.

Activities

Personality Devlopment Programme
A two day personality development programme was held for the final year Degree students by Mr. Abraham Stephen on the 19th and 23rd of June 2006. In the class students students     were also told the importence of developing a positive attitude, the do's and do nots of a job interview. Classes were also held on preparing job resumes.

Interview for the First Year Students
The interview for the first year students was counducted on the 26th of June 2006. Inorder to familiarise the students with the working     of the course the students were given an orientation programme by Mr. Sojan Sebastain and Mr. Aby Varghese of the iTwist group, the HRD people on the 12th and 13th of July 2006. The class was activity based where intense student participation was called for in the form of debates, discussions, talent rounds, games etc.

On The Job Training
As a part of the curriculam the students of second and third year have to attend     compulsory on the job training and undertake projects for the various companies outside the state. In order to familiarise the students with the acctual working within the industry as a proffesional, the students were given a class by    iTwist of Kottayam on the 10th and 17th of October 2006. It proved to be a very beneficial class as the students were told how to write a project report, do presentations etc.

Inter Collegiate State Level Seminar
The major event of the academic year was the Inter Collegiate State Level Seminar held on 19th and 20th     of October 2006. The seminar     was titled "Coconut, Its Products and Health Benefits on Consumers". The seminar was conducted with the sponsorship of the    Coconut Development Board, Cochin. Eminent speakers were invited for the two day programme. The product coconut was selected as controversies have always surrounded the product with respect to its health effects on consumers and also being the largest producers of coconuts in the country. Kerala lags behind in production of value added products due to non application of the right processing techniques. packaging     and preservation technologies.
Four Technical Ssessions were organised with interactons between the students and speakers. The seminar was inaugurated by the District Collector of Kottayam, Sri Raju Narayanaswamy IAS. The valedictory function had Mr. Mneme George, Chief Editor of     Karshaka Sree, Malayala Manorama, Kottayam, as the Chief Guest.    

Session on Health Benefits

The seminar on health benefits was a session open to the public to attend.
The colleges which attended the seminar include N.S.S Hindu College, Changanacherry. MACFAST Thiruvalla, S.B. College Changanacherry, C.M.S College Kottayam, B.C.M College Kottayam, St Teresas College, Ernakulam. There were 400 participants inclusive of delegates from the food industries.

Study Tour
On the 24th of October 2006 the students of the final year along with Mrs. Annie Thomas     and Miss. Neethu Joseph took the final year students to Hyderbad for     a study tour. On 29th October 2006 they returned.

Interaction Session
On the 5th of December 2006 the first year students were allowed an interaction session with Mr. Sadanandan of theDairy Training Center, Erayilkadavu, Kottayam. A class was also conducted on "Milk And Milk Products", where all the products of the milk were introduced, along with its processing and Microorganisms responsible for spoilage.

Class on Stress Management
A classs on stress management was conducted for the final year students as an     interdepartmental activity on the 22nd of January. The speaker for the occasion was Rev. Dr. Betsy, Senior Lecturer from the department of Family and Community Science,B.C.M College. The class introduced the students to the various forms of stress and ways to manage the same.

"Techno Blaze" the Students Magazine.
The     highlight of this year in addition to the seminar that was conducted on "Coconut Products, Its Processing and Health Benefits on Consumers" the students decided to bring out their own department magazine titled " Techno Blaze".     A lot of effort went into the preparation of the magazine with informative and aesthetically prepared articles from the students and staff. It was released on the 5th of February 2006.
